About

Grills GolfI have been involved in the fitness industry for 20 years.  After a 10-year career in medical nursing I decided to do what I loved best and that was fitness training, particularly sports performance.  My spouse an avid golfer was always complaining of tight hips and back pain after a game of golf that lasted for more than a few days. I decided to start working on his core foundation and added stretching technique to his program.  After a few short months he has now experienced first hand the benefits of his training.  Since his improvements in his post game pain, fitness level and improved golf scores I thought I’d like to develop myself more in this area.

After contacting the CHEK Institute who offered an intensive Golf Biomechanical Certification Program Course, I was put in contact with one of the instructors.  Her name is Janet Alexander and she has been the personal golf fitness trainer of Mike Weir since April of 2001.  I was of course excited to be under the tutelage of such a trainer who also has a number of other PGA and LPGA pros under her belt plus many amateurs and teaching pros.  Paul Chek is world renown in the fitness industry for his expertise in the field of corrective and high performance exercise kinesiology.  Paul has written the “Golf Biomechanic’s Manual” and here are a couple of quotes on the book:

“I have had the occasion to work with some of the best physical conditioning specialists in the golf industry today… I can say without reservation that Paul Chek, his work and contribution in the field of golf is on the cutting edge.”  Bob Cisco, PGA Tour Instructor

“This is the first golf conditioning book that treats golf as an athletic movement and golfers as athletes.  This is by far and away the best conditioning book I have read on golf.”  Al Vermeil, Strength Coach, Chicago Bulls

Grills GolfPeter Twist of Twist Conditioning Incorporated has been the Head Conditioning coach for the Vancouver Canucks for the past 9 years and now is a consultant because of his demands teaching other coaches and trainers his 7 phase sports-specific conditioning programs.  “It is imperative when attempting to train athletes that your exercises replicate the bioenergetics, muscle mechanics, neuromuscular requirements and muscle physiology of game demands.  Sport-specific drills can also incorporate sport technique, individual tactics, segments of team systems, plus the sport environment they compete in.”  Peter Twist from Excelerate Sport Performance Certification.

Andre Noel Potvin of Info Fit has 17 years experience with 7 years specializing in exercise and cardiac rehabilitation.  He has his Master of Science degree at UBC.   He is a recognized BCRPA Trainer of Leaders and is member on both the BCRPA Personal Trainer and Strength Training Subcommittees.  Andre is an ACE Clinical Exercise Specialist, Certified Personal Trainer and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.  I continue to take Andre’s courses because of his practical and vast knowledge in the fitness industry.

The Titleist Performance Institute by founders Dr. Greg Rose and Dave Phillips have developed a series of training programs and certifications which I am currently attaining.  They are well recognized for their fitness program on the Golf Channel.

Golf Fitness

Why hire a golf biomechanic?  Having a trained eye to assess and correct muscle imbalances during the complex movement of the golf swing is what I have been trained to do.  My mentors Janet Alexander who trains Mike Weir and Paul Chek of the CHEK Institute who wrote the Golf Biomechanic’s Manual.  Functional training is just that, it leads to a better functioning body.

A body that functions better especially through the rigors of 18 holes of golf is one that will likely remain injury free.  That is my goal, to keep players enjoying the game longer and yes, they do increase their drive!  Back pain is one of the leading problems for golfers and through an effective conditioning program this can be alleviated.
